Come To Me: How To Find Rest When You’re Weary

come to me

Learning to Lay Our Burdens Down (Matthew 11:28-29)

It was a day of many sighs. And I couldn’t even figure out why. Which of the many things that I could worry about, was I worrying about?

I busied myself. Packing lunches, listening to stories, checking off tasks.

But the heaviness persisted. I didn’t have the strength to dig deep and figure a way out of it. Staying inside my little dark cloud was the easier thing to do.

Then, like a familiar song that softly but suddenly invades our thoughts, it came to me. The Word I needed to hear.

I still didn’t know why I was weighed down that day. But I knew what I had to do.

Maybe you do know what’s causing your heaviness. Or you’re clueless, like I was. Whatever your burden, His invitation is the same. Come.

Come to me

When my little one is hurt, the first thing I do is call her to me. Often, all she needs is a long, warm bear hug. Wrapped in my arms, she releases all her hurt.

Sometimes that’s all we need, too. To sit in the warmth of His presence. To simply be still and know that He is God (Psalm 46:10). And so, He calls us, “Come.”

It’s a simple step, really. Going to Him.

Yet, when I’m hurt and sad, I’m usually not ready to turn to Him. I question why I have to go through this in the first place. Why didn’t He simply spare me this?

See, that’s what happens when we grow up. The older we get, the more reluctant we are to drop our guard and simply be held. In our hurt, in our anger, with our questions.

And yet, that’s precisely what we need to do: To go to Him, just like a child.

Take my yoke

Jesus promises us rest and then says something surprising: “Take my yoke upon you.” Hmmm. That sounds confusing: Why would I want to take up a yoke when I’m already weighed down?

But Jesus’ listeners knew exactly what He meant. They were crushed under the yoke of unjust Roman demands and unreasonable religious laws.

We live in a different time. But our culture is no less burdened. We all carry yokes — the yokes of comparison, discontent, perfectionism, unforgiveness, jealousy, and so on. These joy-robbers deprive us of rest.

Jesus isn’t asking us to take up an extra load. He’s inviting us to trade our burdens for His gentle, light yoke: love of God that overflows into love of neighbor.

His yoke doesn’t steal our rest; it restores it. But first we have to lay down our own yokes.

Learn from me

Ripped notebook pages with words anxiety, stress, depression, give it to God and a pen on a table.

When I choose to let go of my own yokes and take up His instead, Jesus and I will share a yoke, like two oxen yoked together to plough a field. That means He’ll be walking right by my side. And I’ll be learning from Him, first-hand, how to tackle everything that life throws at me.

But for that, I first need to come to Him and receive His rest. To release my burdens, my worries, my sadness into His hands. I need to trust that He’s got me covered. And that His plans are far greater than I could imagine (Jeremiah 29:11, 1 Corinthians 2:9).

Only in His arms will I find real rest. Not just a break or a nap, but real peace that surpasses understanding.

So pause today and ask yourself:

  • What yoke am I carrying that is making me restless?
  • What steps do I need to take right now to lay it down at Jesus’ feet?

Take some time to consider these questions. Because Jesus’ invitation is truly life-changing. He’s offering to walk in the middle of it all with you. To shoulder the load alongside you. If only you’d lay down those yokes. If only you’d come to Him.

I hope you do❤️.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for loving me so much! I come to you just as I am. Tired, restless, burdened. Today, I choose to lay down all yokes at your feet: my anxieties, my unforgiveness, my discontent. Teach me to rest in you. To learn from you. And to walk with you. I trust that in You, my heart will find its rest. Amen.
